When starting the game players are able to choose from three different character factions each of which have two classes. During creation, you can customize your character by deciding on:

  • Character Name
  • Game Mode
  • Gender
  • Face Type
  • Hair Style
  • Facial Hair (if Character is Male)
  • Accessories (if Character is Female)
  • Skin Tone
  • Hair Color
  • Height
  • Bulk

There is also a 'Randomize' button that will customize a character for you automatically (with the exception of Character Name, Game Mode and Gender). You can either modify it from there, hit 'Randomize' again, or hit 'Accept' and play with your new character!

To advance your character through the game you must kill countless Demons! Killing demons awards experience points that eventually add up to a level. Each level you are given 5 stat points to spend on your character Attributes, as well as 1 skill point which you can invest into one of your characters skills. The maximum level you can get your character to is 50.

[edit] Attributes

Hellgate: London, like most RPGs, has several character attributes that effect the performance of your character. HG:L's attributes are quite different from those that we usually see in other games of the same genre but make sense given the new perspective this game has. Upon gaining a level, a player receives points that can be distributed into each of the four main attributes. These attributes also determine what items the player can use. The total amount of any attribute is the maximum that all of the equipped items can use. For instance, a player that has 10 Stamina that is holding a weapon that requires 5 Stamina, will only have 5 Stamina left for other items to use when equipped.

[edit] Accuracy

Every point added to Accuracy adds a 2% bonus to Critical Damage and decreases missile spread.

[edit] Strength

Every point added to Strength increases your ability to wear heavier armor and adds 1% additional melee damage.

[edit] Stamina

Every point added to Stamina adds 5 additional Health points.

[edit] Willpower

Every point added to Willpower adds 2 additional Power points and increases your Power Recharge rate.

[edit] Other Stats

[edit] Health

Health is rather important; without it you die. Health is increased by adding to your Stamina attribute. Health is always being regenerated over time and this regeneration rate is shown in your character screen. Health Injectors, which you can find or buy from vendors, can dramatically increase this regeneration rate depending on the rank of the Injector.

[edit] Power

Power can be just as important as Health depending on your class. Without it, you will have no way to perform your special attacks or spells. Power is increased by adding to your Willpower attribute. Power is always being regenerated over time and this regeneration rate is shown in your character screen. Powerpacks, which you can find or buy from vendors, can dramatically increase this regeneration rate depending on the rank of the Pack.

[edit] Speed

Speed determines how fast the character can move around the world. 100 is the default value, but this can be increased with items that buff speed, or by using an Adrenaline Pill which will give you a burst of speed for 15 seconds.

[edit] Shields

Shields prevent you from taking damage, as well as protecting you from the Special Effects of enemy attacks (For example you cannot be ignited if you have shields still up). However, once your shields reach 0 you are vulnerable to all attacks and will begin losing health when taking damage. Shields will regenerate when you stop taking damage, however if you need a boost to your shields urgently, you can always use a Shield Booster which will instantly top up your shields by a certain amount depending on the rank of the Booster.

[edit] Armor

Armor is what protects you from taking the full force of enemy damage. The higher your armor, the more damage you are able to absorb, so consequently the less damage you will take. Your character can wear seven types of Armor, and each contribute a fixed percentage to your overall Armor Rating.

  • Helmet: 16%
  • Shoulder Armor: 12%
  • Torso Armor: 24%
  • Gloves: 10%
  • Belt: 8%
  • Leg Armor: 18%
  • Boots: 14%

[edit] Defenses

This represents your defense against a certain Special Effects Damage. The higher you can get your defense against each type, the less often the Special Effects Damage will affect you. Below are the five different Special Effects and their effect they have on your character (these effects work against demons as well if you have a weapon or skill/spell that deals Special Effects Damage).

  • Stun Effect: You may not move, attack, or defend for a short amount of time. If you use a Gyro Brace your defense against Stun attacks will be greatly increased for 60 seconds.

  • Ignite Effect: While ignited you lose 5% Health per second. You may use a Fire Retardant to remove the Ignite effect from your character, as well as increase your defense against Ignite attacks for 60 seconds.

  • Shock Effect: You may not use any of your skills while shocked. You may use a Shock Guard to remove the Shock effect from your character, as well as increase your defense against Shock attacks for 60 seconds.

  • Phase Effect: While phased, you take 50% more damage from attacks, and your attacks do 50% less damage. You may use a Spectral Brace to remove the Phase effect from your character, as well as increase your defense against Phase attacks for 60 seconds.

  • Poison Effect: While poisoned, you take damage and are unable to use a Health Injector until the effect has worn off. You may use an Antivenom Injector to remove the Poison effect from your character, as well as increase your defense against Poison attacks for 60 seconds.
